Sigma Tau Gamma - Gamma Theta Chapter

The House

Our house which is the original house of our founders still stands to this day. We can house up to 8 members (the largest amount on campus) and are within walking distance from school. Out future plans are to level the current house and build a traditional fraternity house which should house over 20 members. Our scholastic resources include a study room, study groups, and a scholastics board which supervises the achievment of every member. Our house is equiped with wireless internet and a community desktop computer. Our athletic teams are some of the best on campus. We have campus intramural teams in football, soccer, hockey, vollyball, basketball, and bowling. We participate in Greek Week which is a weak full of nothing but sports. For the past eight years we have won this competition. Many alumni of Sigma Tau Gamma reside all over Saint Louis. This leads to many job opportunities post and during college.

Sig Tau Nation

Their grandfathers were veterans of the Civil War. That was a domestic quarrel. They were about to embark on a journey that would take them back to the "old country." It was the "War to end all Wars." That was the noble sentiment applied to World War I. General John J. (Black Jack) Pershing; a native son of their native state – Missouri – was selected by President Woodrow Wilson to command the American Expeditionary Force. As volunteers, they would leave their small Midwestern normal school and follow him.

They were not ordinary men. In an era when fewer than half of our nation's young people advanced beyond the eighth grade, and fewer still graduated from high school, these children of farmers, craftsmen and shop keepers in the sparsely populated rural counties of western Missouri were pursuing a normal school diploma. That was a two-year post high school education that qualified them to teach and administer public schools. Almost uniformly, they were as well qualified academically as students at the private and land grant colleges. They simply lacked the financial resources necessary for enrollment at those schools.

Together they joined what was then called an Ambulance Company. Today we would call them corpsmen and emergency medical technicians. Near the end of 1918, after 18 months of battle, the armistice came, war ended and after serving in the occupational force, by steamship they headed home.

While they were gone to war their school had become a four-year college. It was the summer of 1920. They were what we would today call non-traditional students. Emmett Ellis, their leader, was 29. These were not starry-eyed children. They were veterans who had met death face to face. Even so, they did not stare death down, for that is impossible. Rather, they fully realized the essence of a life worth living, a life that manifests itself in caring, one for the other.

They were determined to make the bonds of brotherhood expressed in the trenches of WWI manifest in the bonds of brotherhood expressed in the enlightenment of a liberal arts education. They were, these founders of Sigma Tau Gamma, hopeful people.

Thus, Sigma Tau Gamma began, on a warm summer day in a rooming house at 101 Ming Street, just blocks from a humble school dedicated as they were to the pursuit of the American dream.

Nothing has changed. Sigma Tau Gamma still values brotherhood, a liberal arts education, the pursuit of knowledge and the pursuit of the American dream for every member. And, we believe that those values apply to everyone. Sigma Tau Gamma does not discriminate. It was the first multi-racial fraternity.

You will find in Sigma Tau Gamma the values and traditions about which you can be proud.

What is a fraternity?

A fraternity is a group of men who all hold a certain set of values to be most dear to them. By living out these values in daily life, the men form a close-knit brotherhood that is bonded by a shared devotion to these ideals. This continues throughout the lifetime of a member.

Why should I join Sigma Tau Gamma?

What financial obligations go along with being in a member of Sigma Tau Gamma? As with any nationally recognized fraternity, there are some expenses that each member must account for. Each individual chapter is self-sustained through the dues paid by each member, which vary depending on the chapter's expenses.

Will being in a fraternity get in the way of my schoolwork? While getting good grades in college can be difficult, it is up to the individual to work hard and use all of the resources available to them. By being part of a fraternity, a new wealth of resources are available to you in the form of other members taking similar classes, study tables, and recognition programs for superior academic performance. At Sigma Tau Gamma, the scholarship of our members comes first and with proper time management and a dedication to succeed, the membership in a fraternity can only help to achieve you academic goals.

What sort of leadership experience can a fraternity give me?

A fraternity is an organization run by its members, Sigma Tau Gamma being unique in its corporate business structure. Upon joining you become an essential part of its daily operation. From managing the finances of the group to planning social and philanthropic events, there are multiple avenues to explore to gain leadership experience.

How time consuming is a membership in a fraternity?Joining a fraternity does mean that some time must be afforded to the business of the chapter. Like joining any other organization on campus, the involvement of each member is essential for the group to succeed. This time commitment is meant in no way to interfere with a student's academics, and involvement in a chapter has been shown to increase graduation rates as well as leaving the student with a more positive college experience.

What is Sigma Tau Gamma's stance on hazing?

Sigma Tau Gamma has a strict no hazing policy. Read our Risk Management Policy. Members of Sigma Tau Gamma are taught respect and understanding of all of their brothers and as a result hazing is not tolerated.

How can I join Sigma Tau Gamma?

The best way to go about joining a chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma on your campus is to participate in formal recruitment efforts of the chapter. In this way, you can get to know the members of the chapter and ask all the questions you may still have about joining a fraternity. Everyone wants to be part of a group, but it is important that you choose the one that best fits you based upon their programs, beliefs, and other strengths. Or you can fill out the form on this site Join an Existing Chapter and someone from the National Headquarters will be in touch with you shortly regarding your inquiry.

What happens once I join?

The actual process of becoming an initiated member of Sigma Tau Gamma can be found in the Path of Principles program. This member education process is intended to develop each person into not only a college student in good standing, but also a citizen of one's community. After this program is complete, one becomes an initiated member of Sigma Tau Gamma and is able to enjoy all of the privileges that go along with membership.

What if there isn't a chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma on my campus?

Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity is committed to spreading our brotherhood across the United States. In the words of R. Scott Troester, Beta '80, our 32nd National President, we seek "to plant new flags". We accomplish this goal through expansion. Expansion is the process of bringing new Chapters into the Fraternity. Sigma Tau Gamma is interested in returning to campuses where we have had Chapters in the past as well as starting brand new Chapters on campuses where we have never been before.

The men who are involved in starting a new Chapter are known as founders. Founders are a special breed; they have the challenge of maintaining their academic pursuits while recruiting other founders and forming a new Sigma Tau Gamma Chapter. If you feel you are the right man to take on this challenge please click on Start a Chapter.
